A Partnership for Success
Protected&Proud, Aotearoa’s consumer‑led contraception platform, was created to provide clear, unbiased information and connect people with trusted local services. Since its inception, the kaupapa has been developed and led by Suzanne Board (Inospire Limited), who partnered with Healthpoint to scale the initiative from regional to national – without building or maintaining a separate service directory.

At a Glance
- Challenge: National expansion without adding admin overhead
- Solution: Healthpoint API
- Outcome: Nationwide coverage, always-current service information, zero manual maintenance
The Challenge
Protected&Proud www.protectedandproud.nz began as a locally co-designed contraception information website for women and wāhine in the Bay of Plenty in 2020. Built on deep consumer insight, the initiative provided clear, unbiased information about contraception options and where to access them locally.
In 2023, Protected&Proud secured funding to scale nationally, with New Zealand College of Sexual and Reproductive Health (NZCSRH) joining as the lead partner to support the expansion. But doing so included expanding their local contraception service directory – which came with a significant challenge:
Building and maintaining accurate, up-to-date service information at scale.
As Protected&Proud explored national expansion, colleagues in the sector suggested that scaling would require dedicated admin resource to manage and maintain contraception provider information.
Rather than accept this as inevitable, Suzanne and the team at Inospire Limited, who lead the Protected&Proud kaupapa, sought a smarter, more sustainable way forward – one that used technology and partnership to support national scale without adding long-term operational burden.
The Solution: Partnering with Healthpoint
Protected&Proud partnered with Healthpoint to enable national scale in a way that challenged the assumption that growth would require building and maintaining their own service database.
By integrating the Healthpoint API, Protected&Proud could access trusted, real-time service information from Aotearoa’s national health and social services directory – without manual data collection or ongoing maintenance.
Healthpoint worked alongside Protected&Proud to:
- Introduce new consumer-informed contraception service types (IUDs/Implants) into the Healthpoint directory
- Continue to support providers to identify to self-maintain accurate information on Healthpoint
- Support Healthpoint’s API integration into the Protected&Proud website

The Outcome
National scale at pace
With contraception providers already listed across Healthpoint, Protected&Proud launched nationally without delay or duplication, revealing a broader network of trained practitioners across the rohe and addressing a long‑standing gap in service and skill visibility, particularly for Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARCs).
Always-current service information
Service details stream directly from Healthpoint via the API, reflecting updates made by providers themselves. Accuracy is maintained without manual intervention.
No admin overhead
Protected&Proud avoided the need for dedicated admin resourcing or ongoing operational costs.
Consumer-first experience preserved
Users remain within the Protected&Proud website and map experience, while Healthpoint quietly powers the service information behind the scenes.
Why It Matters
Protected&Proud successfully scaled from a district initiative to a national platform in a matter of months – whilst staying true to its consumer-led kaupapa.
This partnership demonstrates how community-led digital initiatives can:
- Scale equitably and sustainably
- Reduce operational burden
- Maintain trust, accuracy, and consistency nationwide
A Repeatable Model
This approach is now a blueprint for:
- National consumer health platforms
- Regional initiatives scaling nationally
- Public health campaigns
- Equity and access programmes
- Provider networks and referral tools
When the goal is impact, not overhead, national expansion should feel achievable. This case study shows how a collaborative approach can make that possible.
The Healthpoint API offers a clear alternative to admin-heavy models of expansion. It reflects a future-focused, smarter way of working – built on partnership, sustainability and shared infrastructure.
